In his opening statement, he describes the state's recovery from economic recession, the various international trade missions he took, new business investments, land use acknowledgements, ballot measure 2, unemployment, and homelessness in Oregon. He also answers several questions from the press regarding unemployment, his hopes for the 1985 session, development of the Columbia River Gorge, tree fumigation, the Hanford nuclear site, the sales tax, and his legislative appointments.
