William Alonso Clapshaw was an amateur photographer. He set up a basic studio in his own home, using a plain sheet for a backdrop. Nevertheless, the portraits he made rival that of any contemporary professional. Though some of the negatives were scratched or damaged, Clapshaw's composition, lighting and connection with his subjects was of the highest quality.
