Description
A short statement by U.S. Congressman Les AuCoin on the defeat of a proposed constitutional amendment in the House of Representatives to ban busing. Congressman AuCoin called the defeat of the proposed constitutional amendment a "victory for those who seek a just and more equal society." Busing, also called desegration busing or race-integration busing, was the practice of busing students to public schools outside of or within their school district in order to encourage racial integration. AuCoin served in the Oregon House of Representatives (1971-1975) and in the United States House of Representatives from Oregon's 1st District (1975-1993).
