Portrait of James Stewart, Nez Perce man

Title

Portrait of James Stewart, Nez Perce man

Description

Portrait of James Stewart, who graduated from Chemawa Indian School in 1885. He also attended the school under its previous name and location, the Indian Training School in Forest Grove. Stewart entered the school on May 14, 1883, and was a member of the Nez Perce tribe from Lapwai, Idaho. In this picture, he is wearing a military uniform, probably indicating that he participated in the military drilling program at the school. This photograph probably dates from between 1885-1889; it may have been a graduation portrait.
