Portrait of John D. Shorb. He appears to be sitting or standing with his left hand on a book. This book title can not be read but next to his hand is a Holy Bible and a book titled “Practical Steam Engineering Guide” Mr. Shorb’s hair is combed back but behind his ears the hair takes on its own character. His mustache looks somewhat unkept. He could be smiling or snarling for the camera. He is wearing a jacket buttoned except for the top button.

Shorb, one of Oregons old settlers, died at his home in Gales Creek February 14th, 1909 at 7:45 A.M., aged 87 years and one day. He was born February 13th, 1822 in Jarroll County, Maryland. He received his education in what is known as the Keys school house and finished his education in a select school of Carroll County, Maryland. He taught school in his younger days in the State of Maryland and later clerked in a drygoods store in Baltimore and about his time he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Kesselring, March 12th, 1843, and in the year 1856 he went to Kansas to locate a home and was there during the border ruffian trouble in 1856 and moved his family there in the spring of 1857 and remained there until 1864 when he started west across the plains with one team of horses and two oxen. Arriving in Grande Ronde Valley, Oregon in November of the same year and in the fall of 1865 he came with his family to Washington County, Oregon where he has resided ever since stopping one year in Scoggins Valley and about three years on east Dairy Creek near what is now called Roy. In the fall of 1868 he moved on his homestead near Hillsboro where he resided until in the spring of 1888 he sold the homestead and moved to Forest Grove ([black ink] 1888-1893)where he was living when the death of his wife occurred on May 5th, 1892 and about one year later he came to Gales Creek where he has resided ever since. There were born to them eight children – five girls and three boys of whom seven now survive him: W.S. Shorb of Scotts Bar, California; John F. Shorb of Sunny Slope, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Addie S. Burns of Nome, Alaska; Mrs. Maggie Brown and Mrs. Alice Coffin of Condon, Oregon; H.F. Shorb and Mrs. C.S. Lafferty of Gales Creek whit twenty-four grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Mr. Shorb always lived a straight forward, honest and moral life. Funeral services were held in the Gales Creek Union Church at 10 o’clock. Services conducted by Rev. Moffit of Newberg and the remains were taken to the Buxton Cemetery near Forest Grove for internment.
