Shown in front: Alma Gates Brickey, Austin H. Gates, Barbara Giltner Gates and Alice V. Gates Ward. Back: George B. Gates, John Wesley Gates and James Gates In 1908 Barbara and Austin lived in a house just north of Forest Grove, Oregon, having moved there in the early 1890s. Their daughter Alma was married to James Brickey, they had come from Nebraska with the rest of the family in 1890 and took up a homestead on the 'high desert' of Central Oregon. It is likely that they raised cattle there. There is still a water hole known as the Brickey Well near Hampton, Deschutes County, Oregon. Austin was known as "Doctor" Gates in Forest Grove for his ability as a horse doctor. Barbara was born in Pennsylvania and said her family was 'slop bucket dutch' aka a term not yet deciphered other than dutch for deutch (German). The daughter Alice married Frank Ward and remained in Tekamah, Nebraska. Frank was a county judge. George B was a farmer and mechanic, he helped in the development of a lumber carrier when he worked for a large mill in Dallas, Polk County Oregon. He married Lettie Hayes in Nebraska, they lived most of their years in Oregon John Wesley became a farmer in Oregon, he took to the mechanical age, and early bough a tractor, and one of the first combines in his neighborhood. He married Minnie Gordon who he had met at the Methodist Church in Forest Grove. Barbara adopted James Gates, he was brought to them at age 7 about 1884. He lived in Portland after his marriage to Lora Fuqua. He was a streetcar conductor in Portland, where he met with a fatal accident at his work in 1915.
