Portrait of John Gates

Description

A professional portrait of John W. Gates. He is standing with one hand resting on a stump and the other holding a lever action rifle that is resting on the floor. Behind him is a backdrop of a creek with shrubs and trees along its banks. John looks to be about 25 year old and has a well groomed mustache that goes below his lips. He is wearing a cowboy style hat with a round brim, a long sleeved shirt with a bow tie and vertical stripped trousers. A watch chain is clipped to the shirt, he has a couple of long slender items in his breast pocket and is wearing a cartridge belt and a fairly long, around 12 inch, sheath knife.
[front] John Gates; [back] John Westley Gates: Born in Burt County, Nebraska in 1864, John loved plants. When he moved to Oregon and had his own farm, he planted many plants and varieties of apples that would grow in this more moderate climate. He an Minnie cleared their farm by logging, burning and using goats to eat the brush. He farmed with horses into the 1930s. He kept the horses even after he bought an IH tractor with iron wheels and cleats. The tractor towed one of the first combines in the area, it was also an IH (International Harvester) Number 8 with high iron wheels. He milked cows, raised chickens and pigs, as well as grain and hay. He planted 8 acres of filberts, one of the orchards in the area. John was about 5’ 6” tall, a smallish man with a size 7 boot. He and Minnie were married in Forest Grove on Valentine’s Day 1896, they had three sons.
