Mary A. Brown (1851-1916)

Mary A. Brown ran the Hillsboro Postal Service from 1875-1896 during a time when only 10% of postmasters identified as women.

Emma Carstens McKinney (1872-1964)

While working for the Hillsboro Argus, entrepreneur Emma Carstens McKinney purchased half of the newspaper business in 1904 then became the sole owner by 1909. The Hillsboro Argus ran from 1894-2017 and was one of the longest running newspapers in Washington County.

Minnie Jones Coy (1895-1952)

In 1918, Minnie Jones Coy established Jones Hospital in Hillsboro, Oregon. She is pictured here, seated center, with her hospital staff. The hospital's humble beginnings as six beds in Coy's home where she treated her community and delivered babies has evolved into a major medical institution now known as Hillsboro Medical Center (formerly Tuality Healthcare).
