Mrs. Griffin (probably Desire Smith Griffin)

Title

Mrs. Griffin (probably Desire Smith Griffin)

Description

A carte-de-visite format portrait of "Mrs. Griffin," according to a note on the back of the photograph. This is most likely Desire Smith Griffin, the wife of the early Oregon settler, minister, and newspaper publisher, John Smith Griffin. The Griffins were among the earliest white inhabitants of what is now Hillsboro, Oregon. Desire lived from 1805-1884. Based on the format of the photograph and the hairstyle, it most likely dates from the 1860s. There was more information previously on the back of the photo but it is now indecipherable.
