Description

Sepia-toned image mounted on cardstock. Many items are displayed, including statues and framework, and several men and boys are posed with items or tools in hand. Eugene Reiss, the young boy in the center wearing a hat, was born in Hungary but spent a great many years in New York City working as a woodcarver. He arrived in Washington County in 1974 and lived here until his death in 1981. A number of his carvings and tools of his trade are in held by the Washington County Museum in their collections.

Born in Hungary Dec. 28, 1889. Age 16, taking wood carving. Instructor in suit & hat behind him. Mr. Reiss came to New York City age 6, was professional wood carver there or 34th. Did work for Pres. of R. C. A. and many prominent people there. Carved till Death, Jan 13, 1981 at age 91 -- In Hillsboro, Oregon. Lived in apt. Furnished by S. Wess Hebron, a border loft. Some of his carvings I took to Wash. Co. Historical Society. By S. Wess Hebron 1 - 20 - 81. His power of attorney was Lyle Becker, of Hillsboro. Came to Oregon at [illegible] 1974, stayed with Wess and Ruth Hebron till death.
