J. Letterman, Union officer

Title

J. Letterman, Union officer

Description

Sepia-toned portrait of a young man in the uniform of an Infantry officer from the Union Army during the Civil War. His long frock coat has a single row of buttons and shoulder boards, and he wears both a belt and a sash at the waist and a shoulder strap across his chest. His hands rest upon a sword, the sheath just visible at his side. The brim of his Hardee hat is fastened up on his right and has a large feather on the left and an infantry insignia on the front of the crown. He stands against a plain backdrop with a United States flag draped and tied aside as if it were a curtain on his right. This photo was included in a collection donated by a Forest Grove resident, Ruby Bamford. The Bamford family was from England, but lived in Illinois during the Civil War. They settled in the Gales Creek area in the early 1880s. It is not known whether the photos belonged to the Bamfords or to Mrs. Bamford's natal family before their donation.
