Draining the Athletics Field

Title

Draining the Athletics Field

Description

Two photographs showing students or staff of Pacific University working on draining the Athletics Field on campus. The original photographs appear on either side of a page in an album. The front side photograph shows a group of individuals, possibly students or employees, digging a trench on, or adjacent to, the route where a new running track would be installed. The back side photograph shows the same group of people working on a different section of the field.

This photograph was likely taken around 1907, about the same time when the grandstand and Second Herrick Hall (a women's dormitory which appears in the background) were built. This field, later named McCready Field, was in use at Pacific University from the late 1890s through 1991 for football and track events, and continued to be used for soccer through the 2000s. It was partially converted to usage as tennis courts in 2009. Cascade Hall, built approximately where the grandstand formerly stood, opened in 2014.
