Welcome
In the fall of 1916, Pacific was a small college, with fewer than 100 regular students. Nevertheless, it had a rich campus life, complete with theatre productions, literary societies, Greek organizations and sports teams. When America joined the war in April, 1917, campus life changed immediately. Nearly all the men on campus enlisted. Until they came home a few years later, the women students ran the school.
Greta McIntyre Sheeley was one of the women who was present all through the World War I years. She attended Pacific from 1916-1920. During her time as a student, she compiled a photograph album with dozens of images of student life on campus.
The album has special historical value because Greta annotated each picture with notes about names, dates and context of their subject matter. Documenting male students enlisted during World War I , the Boxer Mascot , the May Day Celebration , Clean-Up Day and other traditions and events, she created a unique glimpse into student life at Pacific University in the late 1910s through the early 1920s.
